Event Description

Session 2 - Media Narratives That Shape Rural Places

Presenter:

Ivy Brashear, PhD student in Communication at the University of Kentucky and graduate of the University of Kentucky’s Community and Leadership Development Master’s Program

Host:

Julie N. Zimmerman, PhD, University of Kentucky Milton Coughenour Professor of Rural Sociology

Ivy Brashear, a fifth-generation Appalachian, will discuss the news media’s shaping and reinforcement of narratives about rural places that are often rooted in stereotypes and misconceptions that flatten the varied cultural, social and political experiences that make those places incredibly complex. She covers this phenomenon and what can be done about it through the lens of Appalachia and Eastern Kentucky—a place much maligned and misunderstood in the news media.
